Albania is small but boasts an impressively diverse landscape – from rugged mountains in the north to fertile plains in the interior, and the turquoise sea in the south. In recent decades, the country has undergone profound political change alongside efforts to catch-up economically. Key areas of development include infrastructure, energy, and tourism. However, high unemployment, particularly among young people, brain drain, and wide disparities between urban and rural areas are placing a strain on society. Albania is considered politically stable. The country has been a member of NATO since 2009. In 2014, Albania was granted EU candidate status, and accession negotiations have been underway since 2022.

The German Sparkassenstiftung established its office in Albania in 2020. Through its project work, it promotes financial inclusion of individuals and small businesses, with a focus on rural regions and the sustainable transformation of the financial sector.
