Kosovo is the youngest state in Europe. The parliament in Pristina declared independence in 2008. The country, located on the Balkan Peninsula, is predominantly mountainous and has fertile plains in the west and east. The economy is still developing and is characterised by the service sector, agriculture and remittances from abroad. High unemployment, inadequate infrastructure and low productivity are among the greatest challenges. Kosovo has significant reserves of raw materials such as lead, zinc, and lignite, which dominates the energy supply. However, Kosovo has good conditions for generating electricity from wind and solar energy. In December 2022, Kosovo applied to join the European Union.

The German Sparkassenstiftung opened its office in Kosovo in 2024. Through its project work, it promotes financial inclusion and the sustainable transformation of the financial sector.
